Whitmar Publications is delighted to announce that Paul Sander is the new editor of Digital Printer, replacing Michael Walker, who has edited the magazine since 2017, and is moving on to pastures new. Mr Sander takes over with immediate effect.

Lindsey Pearson, Whitmar Publications’ managing director, commented, ‘I’d like to thank Michael for his hard work and dedication on Digital Printer over these years. He has been responsible for taking the title to new levels, and I’m sure all our readers and partners would wish him well for the next stage in his career.

Mr Sander has more than 20 years of experience in the publishing industry and since 2009 was the proprietor of Panda Media, managing a wealth of content, production and design across a range of B2B publications.

‘I look forward to taking over from where Michael has positioned the magazine, and will continue to deliver the high-quality editorial our readers have become accustomed to. Of course, with all new tenures there will be an element of cross-over, but also a fresh set of eyes and ideas. Getting out and meeting many of you is high on my agenda,’ commented Mr Sander.

Architectural signage specialist Signbox has appointed Hayley Hodgson as general manager. She brings 18 years of experience working in the sign industry with 13 years in project and account management and five years in strategic operations and management to the role.

Ms Hodgson has joined Signbox after 14 years at Octink. During her time there, she project managed signage contracts whilst running a small team of junior project managers. She then became head of project management, looking after a team of over 20 project managers before taking on the role of general manager at the company in 2020.

Ms Hodgson commented, ‘I have known about Signbox for a long time, and I know they are a forward-thinking company with a fantastic culture for innovation and excellence in sign-making. I am also keen to get more involved in new sectors and products, there is great potential to do this with Signbox.’

Mark Bartlett, managing director of Signbox, said, ‘Hayley brings a wealth of experience and a proven track record of success in the industry. She has delivered and overseen some truly incredible projects, as well as having an extensive background in account management, business strategy and senior leadership. Print production-on-demand network specialist Gelato has appointed Bobby Edmundowicz as chief revenue officer (CRO) where he will focus on capturing the commercial momentum and opportunities across Gelato’s business units.

Mr Edmundowicz will lead Gelato’s sales, commercial partnerships, customer success, and acquisition teams, while aiming to grow the company’s US network and partner ecosystem. The new CRO joins Gelato with prior experience as a revenue leader of software companies such as Xactly, Conga, Cloud Elements, UpKeep, and think-cell.

Henrik Müller-Hansen, founder and CEO of Gelato, said, ‘By offering global e-commerce players local production of art, apparel, books, and drinkware, across 32 countries, Gelato supports the rapidly expanding creator economy. Bobby’s unique experience within sales operations and growing SaaS companies, will help us accelerate our growth.’

Over the past year, Gelato has more than doubled its US customer base and sales, acquired 12 new US production partners, and named Atlanta, Georgia, its US headquarters. In 2024, Gelato will aim to continue adding to its US team, planning to triple the headcount by the end of the year.

Despite being refined over the last 15 years, the company’s production software is an area of focus. Mr Edmundowicz’s software development and B2B knowledge will be ‘invaluable’ in its further growth and evolution.

Mimaki Europe has announced the appointment of Takao Terashima as its new managing director, succeeding Takahiro Hiraki.

Manufacturer of inkjet printers and cutting technologies, exclusively distributed in the UK and Ireland by Hybrid Services, Mimaki Europe has looked to long serving Mr Terashima to take the company forward.

Starting his career at Mimaki in 1997 as part of the R&D department, Mr Terashima has developed his knowledge of Mimaki’s technology portfolio and the surrounding market over the past 26 years.

Prior to his new role, Mr Terashima was senior general manager of the Asia Oceania business unit, a position he first started in 2017. Formerly to this, he spent six months as senior deputy general manager of quality management between April and October 2017.

Mr Terashima’s career path has also led him to work beyond Mimaki’s headquarters in Japan, in positions across the company’s branches. He spent four years as managing director of Mimaki Singapore between 2013 and 2017, and he also worked at Mimaki USA early in his career as part of the technical support staff.

Mimaki Europe’s new managing director aims to bring his industry expertise, analytical thinking, business, and team-building skills, as well as his extensive company knowledge, to this new role.

Excited by this latest challenge, Mr Terashima commented, ‘Celebrating the 20th anniversary of the European headquarters, we can look back on the past two decades proudly, thanks to the ongoing hard-work and effort of the team.

The Printing Charity has announced that Nicky Morgan, the Rt Hon the Baroness Morgan of Cotes, has accepted its invitation to hold the office of President for 2024.

Baroness Morgan is a former Conservative MP and minister, and is now a member of the House of Lords. Her portfolio career has encompassed roles across the private and public sectors. She served in the cabinets of David Cameron and Boris Johnson as, respectively, Minister for Women & Equalities, Education Secretary and Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary. She also chaired the House of Commons Treasury Select Committee for two years and was the Member of Parliament for Loughborough between 2010 and 2019. Prior to her political career she worked as a solicitor specialising in mergers and acquisitions.

Baroness Morgan said, ‘During my time as Digital, Culture, Media and Sport Secretary I saw first-hand how print, publishing and graphic arts, and the trades allied to them, such as packaging and paper, continue to shape and define UK culture. The importance of these industries to our economy as well as our society cannot be understated, so I am delighted to be involved with the Printing Charity, whose work provides crucial practical, emotional and financial support to people working in these sectors, whose skills are what drive success, and continued innovation, within them.’

Printing Charity CEO Neil Lovell commented, ‘It is great news for the charity that Baroness Morgan has agreed to support us in this important role, as our President and as the 2024 keynote speaker at our Annual Luncheon in November. She joins an illustrious group of charity presidents,’

Nazdar Ink Technologies has appointed Pramudi Abeydeera as digital ink chemist, with the aim of generating new business and supporting growth of existing accounts.

Joining the Nazdar R&D team, she will be responsible for researching and developing new and innovative inkjet products. Ms Abeydeera brings with her more than four years of experience in inkjet technology R&D, having worked across key development areas such as formulation, water-based coatings and direct-to-garment inks.

Evan Benbow, vice president of research and development at Nazdar, said, ‘Pramudi’s deep understanding of ink properties and her innovative approach to formulation will undoubtedly contribute significantly to our ongoing research endeavours and product development.’

Mutoh Europe, the EMEA business unit of wide-format printer manufacturer Mutoh Industries of Japan, has announced the appointment of Akihisa Ogawa as managing director, chairman of the company.

Mutoh says this strategic decision is driven by its ‘strong commitment’ to accelerating its growth in the EMEA (Europe, middle east and Africa) business area. Mr Ogawa will combine this new role with his existing role as managing director in charge of overseas sales at Mutoh Industries.

While Mitsuo Takatsu as Mutoh Europe’s managing director will continue to oversee Mutoh Europe’s daily operations and the execution of the company strategy, Mr Ogawa will be determining in direct liaison with the board of directors of Mutoh Industries the long term business objectives of Mutoh in the EMEA business area and the overall strategy and direction of the company towards achieving sustainable growth and expanding its footprint.

Currently aged 64 and holding a Master Degree in Economics obtained in 1982 at Sophia University, Tokyo, Japan, Mr Ogawa joined Mutoh Industries in February 2019.  Before this, he achieved a track record of success and experience in overseas sales at Panasonic,  with periods of totalling over 16 years in the USA and nearly three years in China.

Solopress has announced that Paul O’Connor has been appointed to the role of head of commercial development, working alongside head of business development Phil Foster and reporting directly to managing director Simon Cooper.

Mr O’Connor brings two decades of managerial experience within the print industry, partcuallry iun onloine and trade print, having held various roles at Printing.com, Grafenia, and most recently Helloprint, where he was UK country director.

He joins Solopress less than a year after Phil Foster arrived from Saxoprint, and Jack Hughes and Peter Storey joined from Printed.com as product manager and workflow specialist respectively. He will operate primarily from his base in Liverpool, with a remit focused on but not exclusive to the market in the north of the UK.

Mr Cooper commented, ‘Paul’s immense knowledge and experience will be valuable assets as Solopress continues to grow. The fact that leading lights in our industry like Paul are seeing Solopress as a great place to develop their careers is really encouraging. I think that’s a reflection of our ambition, our vision and our values.’

Mr O’Connor said, ‘I’m thrilled to be starting a new chapter in my career with Solopress as head of commercial development. It’s a fantastic time to be joining the company, with so much ongoing investment and some major projects in development.’

The appointment is part of an ongoing programme of expansion by the Essex-based printer that has seen substantial recruitment across all levels of the business, and investment of over £5.5 million in plant and equipment over the last 12 months.

The Stationers’ Company has elected Tony Mash as its new Master, and released the nominations shortlist for the 2023 Innovation Excellence Awards.

Mr Mashis a former CEO of the British Coatings Federation, which serves the paint, wallpaper and printing ink industries in the UK. Born in Guildford, Surrey, he was educated at the Stationers’ Company’s School in London, read chemistry at University College London and gained an MBA after studying at Manchester Business School and the Institute Supérieure des Affaires in Paris. He spent 27 years with ICI and AstraZeneca in a range of international business development, procurement and change roles in the plastics, refrigeration gas, agrochemical and coatings sectors and later worked for British, American, Japanese and Australian companies and spent a total of 16 years working in the USA, where he took American citizenship.

He joined the Court of the Company in 2014 and has since chaired the Industry and the Marketing Advisory Committees. He is now the Treasurer of the Friends of the Stationers’ Foundation in the USA.

Meanwhile, a total of 18 companies have been shortlisted for the Stationers’ Company Innovation Excellence Awards 2023. Now in their ninth year, the awards were established to recognise innovation within the communications and content industries. They are sponsored by print industry body Picon and Mathys and Squire.

The awards have been judged by a panel of nine, who reviewed applications from novel products, services and business processes with a positive financial and ESG impact on customers and on the environment. Winners will be selected for Business Process, Communications Including Marketing, Customer Experience, Product Design, Service Development and Start-up.

The awards event will be held at a luncheon at Stationers’ Hall on 25 September 2023; nominees inlcude Rose Calendars, Xerox, Renz (UK) and Parkside Flexibles.

Ricoh UK has announced the appointment of Glenn Griggs as its new chief executive officer. He succeeds Phil Keoghan who was promoted to lead Ricoh Northern Europe in April 2022.

Prior to this appointment, Mr Griggs held the position of board director of sales, leading a team of more than 250 Ricoh sales employees across the UK and playing a ‘pivotal’ role in steering the business’s transition to a digital services company across multiple divisions and service offerings. Under his leadership, the business received numerous industry awards. 

Nicola Downing, CEO, Ricoh Europe, commented on the appointment: ‘I’d personally like to thank Phil for his committed and successful stewardship as CEO of Ricoh UK and Ireland, and wish him well in his new role within the Northern European region. Glenn has a wealth of experience and brings with him a strong vision and history of driving growth. I look forward to working with Glenn and his team to continue driving our people-first approach across all areas of our business.’

Mr Keoghan commented: ‘I would like to congratulate Glenn on his appointment.
