The British Printing Industries Federation (BPIF) is calling for entries to the British Book Design and Production Awards 2023.

As a prestigious and popular literary event, these are one of the only industry awards to promote and celebrate the excellence and craftsmanship of the British book design and production industry.

Books published between 1 July 2022 and 7 July 2023 are eligible for entry in this year’s awards. There are 18 categories that represent the many various forms books can take. These include everything from Best British Book, Self-Published Books, Fine Binding & Limited Edition Books and Photographic Books. There are two brand new categories for the 2023 instalment of the awards, which are the Innovative Books and Sustainable Books categories.

There is also a category for aspiring students to enter their work, with the opportunity to win £500, as well as a short internship with a designer, publisher or printer.

A panel of industry experts from the areas of design, publishing and production will judge all entries. In addition to the 18 category winners, the book that outshines the rest will win the title of ‘Book of the Year’.

The deadline for entries is 7 July 2023. The awards will be presented at a ceremony on 24 January 2024 at the De Vere Grand Connaught Rooms in London.

Tecnau is taking its Spring Forward with Tecnau series of events live, and the event for UK customers will take place at the Tecnau Experience Centre, Ivrea, Italy, on 24 and 25 May 2023.

After holding annual virtual showcases, Tecnau will stage a physical presentation of its technology. Intelligent Finishing Systems (IFS), Tecnau’s UK and Ireland distribution partner, will host UK operations looking to develop their print production capabilities.

Attendees will be able to see the latest integrated options in post-press paper handling automation for digital printing that support an array of applications, including transactional printing, transpromo, direct mail, publishing, graphic arts, books on demand and short runs.

The event will host live and virtual demonstrations of many of Tecnau’s feeding and finishing products for high-speed production digital presses. They include versions of the new Revolution 50 series for high-speed cutting and stacking of web-fed inkjet output, fully automated BookReady and Stack 1212 for cutting B2/B2+ press sheets down to finished size in a single pass, and a member of Tecnau’s Libra family of book finishing systems. Attendees will be able to participate in a networking forum with colleagues from across the industry.

Eric Keane, IFS managing director, commented, ‘After a couple of years of virtual Spring Forward with Tecnau events, this in-person opportunity will enable operations to explore up close and personal what Tecnau technology can deliver. Tecnau is widely recognised for its vital product development partnerships with customers and every major printer manufacturer. Its history and background in industrial automation has also enabled the development of customised solutions to support specific requests. This approach ensures the development of responsive solutions that meet today’s market demands and, in fact, several products have been inspired by customer requests. At this event UK operations will be able to see for themselves how they can drive their successful ongoing evolution.’

The Printing Charity’s Rising Star Awards are now open for applications for 2023.

The event enables people aged 18 to 30 in the print sector to invest in their future career ambitions by providing funding of up to £1500 for training that develops the skills and knowledge that will grow their personal skillset, beyond the training they are already undertaking in their role.

Previous winners have used award funding to develop a wide range of skills including management training, negotiation, copywriting, pitching, and project management; as well as to fund professional qualifications and Chartered Institute training.

The Printing Charity’s CEO, Neil Lovell, said, ‘Helping young people grow and develop through access to training which will benefit them, their employers and, of course, the print industry as a whole is something The Printing Charity is absolutely committed to.

‘Through speaking to employers in the industry we know that building a portfolio of personal skills such as problem solving, resilience, confidence and effective communication is crucial to help young people develop their career ambitions, stand out, grow and thrive. The Rising Star Awards offer a great way for businesses to underpin their commitment to developing and nurturing the young talent in their organisation by supporting them in their application to develop these skills.

‘I’d encourage anyone thinking of applying to speak to their manager, mentor or HR teams to discuss their career ambitions, and what they could apply for to help achieve these. I’d also encourage anyone working in print who knows potential Rising Stars, in their own organisation or within their wider network, to ensure they are aware of what the Awards scheme can offer.’

Applications close Sunday 2 April, 2023.

With less than three months until the doors open for Printwear & Promotion 2023, an array of new exhibitors has signed up for the first time.

The event, to be held at the NEC, Birmingham from 26 to 28 February 2023, helps companies new to the market introduce their products and services to decorators and to meet with potential new customers. It is also the place for previous exhibitors looking to re-engage with its audience and to grow their already successful businesses.

Following the rapid influx of direct-to-film (DtF) print equipment into the garment decoration market over the last two years, Inkfuse DTF (stand D72) is a business start-up looking forward to sharing its expertise in DtF printing and will be showcasing a range of leading DtF printers. Other new exhibitors include TWT – Transworld Trophies, Trade Embroidery, Sock Monkeyz and BeSmart Pro.

Tony Ellis, of TWT Transworld Trophies, said, ‘Having visited several times in the past, and seen the array of exhibitors, I can see a potential new audience that could be interested in exploring the world of trophies. Visitors should visit our stand to explore awards and trophies as a possible new revenue stream for their business. We are there to show how easily this can be done with minimal outlay and minimal expertise required.’

Returning exhibitors, many of which last exhibited in 2020, include Advance Apparel, Permaset Ink, The Outdoors Company and Trendsetting Awards.

SOS, GMG and Vivid are teaming up for an open house event on 14 and 15 September to show the production of colour-accurate packaging proofs using Roland inkjet printers and Vivid cutting and laminating systems.

The ‘3D proof’ event will take place at Vivid’s showroom in Ashby De La Zouch, Leicestershire, and will demonstrate the production of packaging mock-ups, including cartons, labels and foil packs, on real packaging substrates.

Printing will be done on Roland machines supplied by SOS, the LEC2-330 and LEF2-300. Samples will then be cut and folded on Vivid’s VeloBlade cutter range, enabling visitors to take away a finished product.

The Roland LEC2-330 UV printer prints directly onto the production substrate and premium labels. It has a maximum 762mm media width and can print, cut, perforate, varnish, emboss and add textured UV. The LEF2-300 is a direct-to-object benchtop UV printer, for objects up to 100mm thick. It enables the printing of photos, graphics and finely-detailed text onto PVC and plastics, canvas, wood, leather, fabric, acrylics and glass.

The event will showcase GMG colour management on the LEC2-330, which enables accurate proofs on packaging production substrates, incorporating white ink, allowing for accurate colour reproduction on transparent and metallic materials.

Also featured will be Vivid’s range of print finishing equipment, including lamination, digital foiling, cutting, creasing and folding. Vivid will also be demonstrating its Zip Core Packaging Software, which has been developed to support the packaging design process.

SOS sales manager Ashley Fleming said, ‘The latest equipment and software for packaging proofs can achieve levels of speed and accuracy which a decade ago would be unheard of. This is a must-see event for anyone in the packaging industry.’

Opening times are 10am to 5.30pm on 14 September 2022, and 10am to 3.30pm on 15 September 2022.

InPrint Italy 2018 will welcome visitors from 20-22 November

InPrint Italy 2018, which will welcome visitors at the MiCo – Milano Congressi from 20-22 November, is to showcase the full scope of industrial printing technology, providing a focus on the important part it plays in many markets.

Originally industrial print was defined as the application of print to manufactured products such as packaging, and in functional roles such as control panels on consumer products, dashboards on automotive products and avionics instrumentation.

It is now a key manufacturing sub-process vital to major industry sectors, including textiles – the largest market by value after packaging, plus décor applications that include floor coverings and decorative laminates. Printed glass and ceramics are further core markets for industrial print, together with functional electronics applications like printed circuit boards and transistors.

Overall, the industrial printing market is reckoned to be worth around US$100 billion annually – and is growing fast.

Latest technologies

InPrint Italy offers a great opportunity to learn more about the latest technologies for meeting the varied challenges of these widely differing market sectors. More than 100 companies will be taking part, offering solutions and equipment for functional, decorative and packaging printing applications.

Alongside established systems like flexo and screen-printing, exhibitors will also be presenting products reflecting significant developments in the increasingly important fields of digital and inkjet.

And visitors to the show can also join three days of conferences and exhibitor presentations, many of them aimed at linking innovations in industrial printing technology with potential market applications.
