Becky Bryne, founder of Me Myself and Misha, creates digital artwork, branded packaging, and stickers for online creators using a Roland DG VersaStudio BN2-20 desktop inkjet printer/cutter.

Ms Bryne, a former beauty therapist also known as Misha in the gaming world, shifted her focus into the realm of digital artistry following the closure of her salon due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Established in 2020, Me Myself and Misha evolved from a business offering design services for streamers and gaming conventions to providing an array of products, ranging from stickers and tumblers to custom packaging and apparel.

As the demand for her designs continued to increase, Ms Bryne has installed a Roland DG VersaStudio BN2-20 to meet printing needs while also alleviating the burden of running a one-person operation.

The BN2-20 integrates printing and contour-cutting capabilities. The desktop printer/cutter is described as a ‘versatile’ solution to meet Ms Bryne’s printing needs, whilst removing the need for multiple machines for printing and cutting.

The BN2-20’s versatility means Ms Bryne has been able to print high-quality stickers, apparel transfers, packaging materials, all with colour accuracy and vibrancy.

Unlike her previous setup, which she said to demanded ‘constant supervision,’ the Roland DG BN2-20, equipped with VersaWorks 6 output software, has allowed proactive planning and organisation of print production with its five print queues, five hot folders, and queue settings.

The VersaWorks 6’s media set functions and new sheet cut function, streamlines job setup and execution, while automatic sensor adjustments provide aid in creating the best results in every print.

This has allowed Ms Bryne to save and recall preferences, capture specific print settings, and streamline production into a process which increases overall efficiency.

Ms Bryne explained, ‘Thanks to the BN2-20 Roland DG machine and its integrated VersaWorks 6 software, I’ve unlocked precious time in my day while gaining a virtual extra pair of hands.’

For Me Myself and Misha, closely monitoring the printing process is ‘vital’ to run shorter bursts of personalised orders. Roland DG Connect has provided real-time access to crucial data on print jobs and overall business operations. This on-demand information has allowed the business to adjust its structure, as needed, to maximise efficiency.

Ms Bryne said Roland DG Connect has ‘revolutionised’ its operations stating, ‘We can now schedule runs, track efficiency, and analyse our cycles on the go. This software has enabled me to focus on business expansion and identify areas where I can enhance my design process.’

The relationship with Roland looks to continue as Ms Bryne plans to investment and upgrade to the latest Roland DG UV-LED printer, the VersaStudio BD-8, to help diversify product offerings and ‘expand into new areas’ with direct-to-object printing capabilities.

The Printed Gift House has installed the Mimaki UCJV300-160 UV LED roll-to-roll printer from CMYUK.

The investment is to help the company, situated in Newcastle-under-Lyme, UK, extend its services to a B2B customer base through its new brand, Printing X. It has plans to move into a new business park premises soon.

The company is a personalised on-demand B-to-C gift business which was set-up seven years ago by Ravi and his wife, Achala Wannipuge. Initially working from home, they produced phone cases and cushion covers using sublimation printing and a small heat press. Two years later in order to expand its product portfolio, the business invested in its first printer – a MimakiUJF-3042FX flatbed.

The printer is a highly versatile piece of equipment that integrates both print and cut functions. Its seven-colour inkset builds up to five layers while a high-quality resolution of up to 1200dpi makes it ideal for numerous applications including banners, flags, wallpaper, swing POP, and outdoor signage.

Ravi De Silva Lindamoulage, company co-owner, said, ‘The new Mimaki printer will help us to target businesses with large format banners, Sign boards, canvasses, wall murals, and stickers. We offer a very wide range of services such as promotional gifts, engraving, T-shirt printing, workwear, and embroidery. Whatever our customers want we can provide it.

‘The UV inks on the new printer will propel us into the promo and gifting markets. It can print onto any materials and the 5-layer printing will allow us to present really unique creative finishes. When compared to the Roland wide format printers we had, it beats them hands down. We’ll be offering a whole range of services that target the small business community from banners to posters, sign boards, decals, stickers, and promotional items such engraved pins. We’ve also started T-shirt printing, workwear, and embroidery, there’s not that many places that can offer the versatility of services that we can, which also includes in-house design. We really have such a large range so it’s really a case of you name it, we can print it.’

The Printed Gift has a physical shop as well as a production space fulfilling its online ordering, which accounts for 95% of the business. The company has three full time online staff as well as three full time staff working in the store. Seasonal part time staff are also employed over the busy periods that are traditionally Christmas, Valentines, Mothers’, and Fathers’ Days. In addition, the business operates another brand called Ellipse that is dedicated to personal items and engraved jewellery.

Embroidery business Wizzprint.com has invested in a VersaStudio BN-20 print-and-cut desktop printer after attending a garment decorating course at Roland DG.

The Oxfordshire-based family business, with owner Mark Robson running production and his wife Chloe taking charge of the creative elements, creates business cards, flyers, banners and various types of signage.

Mr Robson said, ‘As a small business, we needed a printer with a small footprint, alongside high print quality. The BN-20 is a reliable workhorse and produces exceptional output from its specified printhead. It is desktop-sized for like-minded entrepreneurs to accommodate in almost any room. You can turn out a quick and professional finish, in high or low volume.’

The machine’s integrated printing and contour cutting function also creates personalised T-shirt graphics, poster prints, stickers, and decals.

Mr Robson added. ‘The BN-20 is the perfect business launching device at an affordable price, but as the business grows, finding good printing partners is essential, and when you do, you tend to stick within them, and they with you, which is why Roland DG’s upgrades and additions are on the cards.’

Northumberland-based digital print service provider Printed.com has invested in a VeloBlade Volta 1070+ digital die-cutting system from Vivid Laminating Technologies in order to expand it services into custom size labels, kiss-cut stickers, invitations and business cards.

The B1-plus format VeloBlade cutting table will allow the company to bring die-cutting in-house, thus reducing costs on short runs and speeding up production times.

Production director David Duncan said, ‘We looked at numerous cutting table solutions such as large format roll-fed cutters and stickers on rolls. We chose the VeloBlade Volta 1070+ from Vivid as it was the most compatible finishing solution for our printing processes. Switching from job to job quickly with minimal set-up changes is key for the high number of small- to medium-sized orders we receive daily, and most importantly the system meets our customers’ needs from an end-product perspective.

‘The Veloblade digital cutting system will also unlock many more opportunities for our longer-term product roadmap and for customers via our bespoke service. Custom shape stickers are our primary focus, with packaging another area we are very keen to explore, but the opportunities really are endless.’

Mr Duncan stated that he is extremely pleased with the Volta’s performance so far. ‘We are busy putting the system through its paces and really testing its versatility with complex and intricate shapes, kiss-cutting and creasing. Our favourite products have been the hexagon-shaped business cards and the arch-shaped and round wedding invitations. These are popular with our customers and a current trend in the industry, but this is only scratching the surface of what it can do.

‘The service we have received from Vivid throughout the process has been excellent, from the in-depth demonstration [to the] training by their servicer engineers, as well as the continued support whilst we get to grips with the new system,’ Mr Duncan concluded.

Solopress has become the first UK customer to install a Motioncutter digital laser cutter supplied by Konica Minolta. Installed in December 2021, the Motioncutter 23 will be used to improve flexibility and productivity in the production of stickers and labels, while reducing material waste and stock holding requirements.

The Southend-on-Sea trade and B2B printer had been producing around £1 million a year using pre-kiss-cut label stock, but the fixed sizes limited production flexibility and the company’s ability to react quickly to market demands. Coupled with an increase in demand, Solopress was looking to invest in a laser cutter that would enable bespoke shapes and sizes to be supported.

Managing director Simon Cooper commented, ‘Having seen the impressive results and the potential for big material cost savings, we felt the Motioncutter 23 was a no-brainer for us. We estimate that the capex costs of the machine will be offset within just 18 months, whilst the operational benefits will be realised right away. Having had a productive year in 2021 we were keen to invest this back into the business right away, so we were delighted that Konica Minolta was able to deliver on its promises so quickly.’

In addition to full and kiss-cutting, the Motioncutter 23 is able to engrave, perforate and crease in a single pass at speeds of up to 45m/min. Its arrival has simplified stock management at Solopress as well as enabling the production of practically shape or size of bespoke label or sticker on coated, uncoated papers and clear or white polypropylene.

Grahame Megilley, industrial print business development manager at Konica Minolta Business Solutions (UK) added, ‘Solopress can supply high quality labels/stickers to a broad range of customers, from printers and resellers to graphic design businesses and (significantly) smaller micro-businesses and home-based businesses that produce very bespoke individual products that require short runs of labels/stickers – something which is often lacking in the market but in high demand post-pandemic.’
