Konica Minolta will unveil a new high-speed UV inkjet press AccurioJet 60000 and the AccurioPress C84hc in Hall 8b at drupa 2024, which are said to ‘shape the future of commercial printing, label printing, packaging, and industrial print.’

The high-speed UV inkjet press, AccurioJet 60000, is explained to be capable of producing 6000 sheets per hour along with duplex printing capabilities. The press produces high image quality and reproduction stability across a range of media, taking advantage of Konica Minolta’s inline sensors and a spectrophotometer to automatically monitor printing conditions.

Visitors to Konica Minolta at drupa will also be the first to see the AccurioPress C84hc, which uses high chroma toner. Free from the restrictions imposed by the colour gamut of ordinary toner, prints are said to be more consistent across bright and vivid colours.

The company will also introduce Myiro colour management tools for graphics arts applications. Developed by Konica Minolta’s Sensing Business Unit, these tools include spectrophotometers for colour management and high-speed auto scanning.

Konica will be joined on the stand by MGI (MGI Digital Printing Systems) showing its new JetSeal and inline die cutter, as well as launching an advanced version of its AccurioPro Colour Manager software suite.

Also joining Konica Minolta will be Industrial Inkjet (IIJ), a specialist in bespoke inkjet customisation, which exclusively uses Konica Minolta print heads in its products; and Plockmatic, a supplier of finishing options, as well as Acco and Fiery.

Konica Minolta will also be running fully automated production lines driven by artificial intelligence, and will show the use of robotics that includes the premiere of a Cobot arm.

Jon Hiscock, head of production and industrial print at Konica Minolta (UK), stated, ‘As a major player in digital production printing it is our mission to promote and support the shift from analogue to digital print. In doing so, we will build a world where high-value-added printed materials are created efficiently with minimal environmental impact.’

Following the successful installation of its first InterioJet press in 2021, décor paper printing company Chiyoda has acquired a second InterioJet water-based inkjet printing press from Agfa to enhance its laminate décor paper print production capabilities.

Chiyoda supplies printed décor paper with exclusive designs to flooring, furniture and car laminate panel makers, catering to their unique requirements. The new  InterioJet 2250i will be installed at the company’s European headquarters in Belgium, joining the original InterioJet 3300i.

The InterioJet presses are driven by Agfa’s Asanti workflow software, which includes a plug-in for décor image optimisation. By working in conjunction with the industry-standard Ava CAD CAM software, Agfa claims to ensure a close match to gravure prints to guarantee consistent results.

‘The InterioJet has proven to be an invaluable addition to our operations, offering unparalleled print quality and great versatility,’ commented Peter Coenegrachts, COO of Chiyoda. ‘Our customers can use the prints in exactly the same way as gravure prints without any modification to their laminate production process. By investing in a second press, we are further expanding our capability to do shorter print runs, allowing us to meet the increasing demand for prints on demand and just-in-time deliveries.’

‘We are delighted to extend our partnership with Chiyoda to drive the digital printing revolution in the laminated surface market,’ said Mike Horsten, business manager InterioJet at Agfa. ‘Building on Agfa’s expertise in chemistry, inks and software, the InterioJet ensures the highest print quality and colour consistency. We are thrilled to witness how our presses cater perfectly to Chiyoda’s needs and enable them to deliver exceptional products to their customers.’

Graphic communications specialist Tórculo has become the first Spanish printer to invest in a Ricoh Pro VC70000 web inkjet press in order to offer a wider range of services and to reduce the cost of book printing.

The company, which was established in 1982, has its main production site at Santiago, with regional sales offices in A Coruña, Vigo and Madrid. It already had a five-colour Ricoh Pro C7200X sheet-fed toner press for very short run work but was looking to improve its services to publishing clients to manage their libraries of titles and reprints, in order to meet trends for shorter runs and tighter deadlines.

Tórculo president Jacobo Bermejo explained the purchase thus: ‘The market requires faster production of shorter runs with variability and customisation. Those are the strengths of digital printing. The technology has matured a lot in a short time and now meets our requirements. The Ricoh Pro VC70000 is unique in today’s market for its ability to work with offset and coated paper alike and that will allow us to deliver a greater variety of applications. We can tackle market spaces that until now were very difficult or elusive. We were also impressed by Ricoh’s commitment to our business. Our sales and marketing team is already working with Ricoh on a development programme to ensure we maximise the opportunities the investment offers.’

The ability to work with both coated and uncoated papers without the need for priming was a factor in favour of the Ricoh web press, as was the facility to batch and nest work for maximum material efficiency. Mr Bermejo was also keen to work with Ricoh’s Edge business development consultancy service to identify opportunities that the new press will enable.

‘We were looking for a partner and Ricoh has proven to be a very reliable and committed one, not only from a technological point of view but also in business development areas. This is very important for us as this is a huge investment for a mid-size company like Tórculo. Ricoh understands this and brings not only technology but also knowledge sharing and support in many areas like sales, communications, targeting, workflow and so on,’ he noted.

An improved drying capability is the key feature of the Truepress Jet 520HD+ that Screen will be featuring at Hunkeler Innovationdays in Lucerne next month.

Already installed at Bluetree in Rotherham, the TPJ 520HD+ as the updated model is called adds NIR (near infra red) drying technology to the ‘air blade’ to provide very rapid drying of the ink without overly drying the paper and so maintain high production speeds. The improved drying performance is said by Screen to allow a wider range of stock to be used with the press.

In conjunction with Screen’s SC inks, which allow inkjet printing on offset coated stocks without requiring any pre-treatment, this extends the range of papers that can be printed at commercial quality and at high speed, which should expand the range of applications for the 1200dpi press.

Screen will also feature the Truepress Jet 520NX at the Hunkeler event. This version of the 150m/min press has a fifth colour which can be used with the company’s UV invisible ink or other special colours for security and anti-counterfeiting applications.

Bui Burke, senior vice president of sales at Screen Europe, said, ‘HID is always a highlight in Screen’s calendar, so we’re delighted the Truepress Jet520HD+ and NIR Dryer will debut at the event. Once again, Screen digital technology is at the forefront of innovation, resulting in market-leading speed, productivity and uptime.’

Howard Hunt has purchased an HP PageWide T240 web inkjet press. The acquisition has been made in order to help the company further diversify its direct mail service portfolio and meet increasing demand from customers.

‘Today’s marketers understand the importance of one-to-one conversations with their customers. Marketers want to use more content marketing tactics, social media platforms, and most importantly relevant messaging,’ said managing director Danny Clarke.

‘In the current economic climate much of our customer base are cost-conscious organisations that need to focus on their causes, not spending too much on marketing but achieving the same if not better results. In an effort to assist them in improving results in a cost-effective manner we are investing in state-of-the-art inkjet technology. We have seen our customers’ data quality improve considerably over the last five to 10 years.’

Deploying the new technology will allow Howard Hunt to enhance the value of direct mail, while reducing costs for volume printing, transition to a ‘white paper’ solution and produce a more micro-segmented, personalised and, ultimately, effective product. The PageWide T240 HD has a print width of up to 521mm and prints at up to 152m/min with a maximum duty cycle of 58 million A4 pages per month.

‘We believe the purchase of a high-speed, continuous-feed inkjet press will be transformational in direct mail printing operations and complement our state-of-the-art printing division,’ said MrClarke. ‘The investment enables us to continue to embody our core values whilst simultaneously pushing the company in new directions that align us with what the customer wants. This investment in Howard Hunt’s print technology will be fundamental to our future growth and success.’

Canon has won a five-year contract worth an estimated £3 million to supply transactional print and mail provider CFH Docmail with an Océ ColorStream 6000 Chroma continuous-feed inkjet press.

Adam Harwood, managing director of CFH Radstock, said, ‘Modern inkjet printing systems offer high quality colour printing at the same or faster speeds than the black-only toner systems, and at a lower price point than mono or colour toner systems. With colour lasers typically only able to produce 80 – 150 A4 images per minute, having a system that can produce 1700 colour images per minute at lower running costs is almost a mandatory capability for a commercial print and mail house.

‘As a major player in the transactional print and mail industry, we needed to find a solution that would allow the company to evolve alongside industry demands, while demonstrating a clear return on investment. We were impressed with the versatility, efficiency and sustainability of the Océ ColorStream 6000 Chroma and, having enjoyed a long partnership with Canon Océ, which supplies our VarioStream continuous toner and VarioPrint cut-sheet printers, we are confident we have made a strong decision.’

CFH runs the Docmail hybrid mail service in which mailing requirements can be entered by customers via a website. The orders are printed and fulfilled at the company’s site using a variety of printing, enclosing and mail sorting equipment. The company says it aims to produce and deliver documents in the most cost-effective, efficient and environmentally friendly way.

Features that swayed the decision in favour of the Océ inkjet included the Chromera inks that yield high quality across a wide range of media, flexibility to switch between mono and colour print on the same stock and MICR and other security-related abilities and accreditations.

Halfway between drupa shows it could have been expected that 2018 would be a fairly quiet year for product announcements, but there was plenty of action, says Simon Eccles.

Despite talk of the days of big print exhibitions being over (reinforced by news of the killing-off of the UK’s Ipex in July), the wish to make big announcements at a drupa still drives the innovations cycle. Most of the drupa 2016 announcements had reached the delivery stage by 2017, so 2018 was mainly going to be the year when suppliers concentrated on deliveries to bring the revenue in.

All the same there were enough significant new kit announcements to fill up Digital Printer’s 2018 news pages. Here is a roundup of what we think were the year’s most significant product announcements.

Inkjet action

While most of the last few drupa events have been dubbed ‘the inkjet drupa’, the products are rolling out steadily now. In February Ricoh announced new pigment inks and tweaked printheads for its 2015 Pro VC60000 high speed rollfed inkjet, intended to handle standard litho papers. In July it announced ProVC70000 with another new inkset and extended driers said to give litho-like quality at the top speed of 150m/min.

Riso revealed the production version of its £120,000 T2 inkjet press, shown as a prototype at drupa 2016. Claimed to be the world’s fastest cut-sheet inkjet press, it hits 320 A4 duplexed sheets per minute. It takes SRA3 sheets too, but A4 transactional print is the target market.

In September Xerox announced a speed bump for its established £465,000 Brenva HD SRA3 press, up from 197 to 275 A4 pages per minute, with 300 A4s achievable on some sheet sizes. Although slower than the Riso T2 it is built for much higher monthly volumes.

The year was rounded off in mid-November with Fujifilm’s announcement of the revised Jet Press 750S B2+ simplex sheet-fed inkjet press. It replaces the 720S from 2014 and is now claimed to be the fastest B2 inkjet press available (in a rather narrow field), thanks to new Samba printheads and improved dryers.

Toner presses

Although inkjet continued to progress, there is still life in toner, with plenty of activity in dry toner digital presses during 2018. Ricoh refreshed its range in several stages. March saw the announcement of the five-colour Pro C7200X for graphic arts applications and the four-colour Pro C7200 for lower cost needs. These replaced the mid-range C7100 from 2015, offering slightly higher performance and a range of tweaks including the ability for the C7200X to print white as an undercoat in the same pass as colour, which now includes fluorescent options.

In May Ricoh introduced Pro C9200, a major update of its range-topping C9100 with more automation and expanded media types and sizes – it can take sheet lengths up to 1030mm (duplex) or 1260mm (simplex) in weights up to 450gsm but doesn’t offer the additional colours of the C7200.

Kodak announced Nexfinity in March as the latest version of its high end NexPress family, claiming litho-competitive running costs. An optional feeder takes sheet lengths up to 1219mm and paper weights up to 530gsm. Also notable is the ability to change the laydown order for colours, so you could place a white undercoat on clear or coloured media, or print more than one special (including clear and metallics); previous NexPress models could only print specials last.

May saw the European launch of the Xerox Iridesse, an all-new high-end press with a lot of automation and new toners. Its standout feature is the ability to print six colours, with specials that include metallic gold and silver before and after the CMYK. White and clear toners are initially available, with the potential to print white under colour with a glossy spot varnish on top.

Xerox hit the news for other reasons throughout 2018 with its proposed on-off ‘merger’ takeover by Fujifilm, which led to a management coup by a couple of activist shareholders. Xerox’s future prospects are uncertain (a “directions” statement is due in February) and a miffed Fujifilm is suing Xerox for US$1 billion while still apparently considering a takeover under different terms.

Wide format

Turning to the wide format inkjet sector, the start of the year saw EFI begin selling its £99,000 Pro 24f flatbed in the UK. At EFI’s Connect event in January it announced two higher end hybrids, the HS125 F4 and HS100 F4 offering higher speeds than their predecessors, plus twin-zone printing/loading. At Fespa in May it announced a pair of 3.2m hybrid UV printers, the h3 and h5, offering 288 or 362sqm/hr respectively. An h3 can be field upgraded to the h5 (see also Product Focus on page 26).

InkTec’s Jetrix KX6U LED continued the company’s move into LED flatbeds with this £67,000, 2.5 x 1.3m model whose 30sqm/hr top speed is a lot faster than similarly priced rivals.

In February Durst announced a whole new hardware and software platform called P5, starting with the P5 250 HS, a 2.5m hybrid sheet-fed printer good for up to 240sqm/hr, resolutions up to 1200dpi and drop sizes down to 5pl. The 200HS, 320 and 200 models follow this. They use modified Fujifilm Dimatix heads and a range of new UV inks. Nearly a year on, Durst still hasn’t released basic specs other than the above for these machines, but it sold the first four printers to Dutch print and fulfilment house Probo in April.

Rumours of a latex ink flatbed printer from HP came true at Fespa in May, with the 2.5m width R2000, followed a few months later by the announcement of the smaller 1.6m R1000. These are the first serious attempts to print onto rigid media with anything other than UV-curable inks since Mutoh tried with a vegetable-based solvent ink about 10 years ago.

Epson replaced its SureColor SC-F2000 direct-togarment (DTG) pigment printer with the faster and generally improved SC-F2100 in January, while Ricoh entered the DTG market with the keenly priced Ri 100 around the same time.

In May Mutoh entered the full-sized UV flatbed market for the first time with the 1.6m ValueJet 1626UH. This is up against Roland, which also in May updated its UV-LED printer range with the VersaUV-S series of flatbed and belt-driven hybrid printers.

In September Mimaki expanded its dye sublimation textile range with the 1.8m TS55-1800, with a claim of high end functionality at entry/mid range pricing. A slightly oxymoronic Mini Jumbo Roll option allows lengthy unattended operations. Over the summer Mimaki’s full-colour 3D printer, the 3DUJ-P, arrived with UK distributor Hybrid Services. Results look great but with a price of about £170,000 it is likely to be a niche product.

Class of '18

HP brought out not one but two flatbed latex printers in 2018. This is the smaller of the two, the 1.6m R1000

Software

Prepress and workflow software progressed steadily with just a few standout releases. Perhaps the most significant developments were paving the way for the next-generation PDF 2.0: Global Graphics added support for PDF 2.0 with its Harlequin RIP-renderer and Adobe did the same with its equivalent APPE 5, which between them underpin most of the world’s prepress workflows. Agfa was the first to announce a commercially available workflow that supports PDF 2.0, with Apogee 11.

No commercial design or prepress programs export PDF 2.0 features yet, but expect that to change in 2019. PDF 2.0 introduces some useful new capabilities, particularly in colour handling, but industry wisdom says its real breakthrough will only come after July 2019 with the publication of the PDF/X-6 standard, which will be based on PDF 2.0.

HP was busy in front-end software, announcing a new Digital Wallpaper system in February, then the Piazza book-of-one software to work with its SiteFlow production software in April, followed in June by its One Package workflow to drive the C500 and PageWide T1190 corrugated presses.

For the past four years UK-based Serif Software has been offering its Affinity Designer and Affinity Photo programs as low-cost but well-specified alternatives to Adobe’s Illustrator and Photoshop within the dominant and now subscription-only Creative Cloud suite. Affinity programs are only £48.95 each (or £19.95 on iPad) as one-off costs for a perpetual licence. This autumn saw the release of a public Beta of Serif’s Affinity Publisher, a layout program that takes on Adobe’s InDesign and well as other established players such as QuarkXPress and Corel Draw. This is due for full release early in 2019.

Industry 4.0 and the future

Possibly an early marker for a new trend in service support, in June Bobst demonstrated the use of Epson’s Moverio smart glasses as part of its Connected Services Helpline Plus remote support. This is likely to cover its Mouvent inkjets in future. The smart glasses let Bobst’s service office talk to an on-site engineer and see video from the glasses, then display text, diagrams and light pointers projected into the glasses.

What else is on the tech horizon for 2019? Having given up trying to sell its Prosper inkjet operation in 2018, Kodak still intends to roll out development versions of its promising new UltraStream heads to third-party integrators in 2019. Landa is at last coming to a UK site with an S10P B1 perfecting Nanography press at Route One Print. There are no big international shows other than the wide formatcentred Fespa in May, but the Hunkeler Innovation Days due for February often trigger announcements of new roll-fed press configurations if not whole presses. Brexit remains a big unknown. Technology developments tend to be international, but the uncertainty of the UK’s economic prospects after March will surely affect sales prospects for months and years to come.

Wallpaper Ink’s new Roland printer is busy producing mural orders.

Specialist wall mural manufacturer Wallpaper Ink has added a second Roland VersaExpress RF-640 inkjet printer to its arsenal, citing ever-increasing demand for bespoke wall murals.

The Pontypridd company serves customers through its website, allowing them to choose mural images from more than 40 million options, as well as their preferred material and dimensions. The customer base is split 70/30 between private and commercial clients.

Both of the firm’s VersaExpress RF-640s, as well as its Roland cutting systems, are running 24 hours a day to produce made-to-measure wall graphics. Average mural sizes are 3m wide by 2.2m high, which can be completed in three hours. Wallpaper Ink offers next-day shipping for orders placed before 3 pm.

Scott Evans, managing director of the company, said a buzz has been growing around murals for more than six years. ‘Wallpaper is back in fashion generally and that, combined with a demand for personalisation, means a thriving market. People want their homes and businesses to be unique.’

He added that the decision to invest in a second VersaExpress RF-640 printer was made as the company was so happy with the first device, while new RIP software is improving print times and increasing margins. Mr Evans continued: ‘The accuracy on running roll-to-roll is great. This is good for us as it means less chance of error when moving the wallpaper onto the cutting machines.’

Next on the agenda for Wallpaper Ink is the introduction of two new wall covering products – a pre-pasted wallpaper and a self-adhesive wallpaper – as well as further growth into the European market.
